I receive emails from a listserv whenever there is big news from Sri Lanka, and this week, so far, I’ve received 3 reports in 3 days of bombings, with a total of 44 killed, and more injured. the bombings occurred in Colombo – the capital city – where many of my relatives live, and in Kandy, where my aunt owns and runs a beauty salon.
The last time that I freaked out, and sent frantic emails to my cousins, they replied with an appreciative, but blase, attitude, similar to the attitude of some of my friends in Israel, another place where danger can lurk anywhere. So, I worry, but resist the urge to write frantically – I really don’t know which is better – at least if I email them, they know that I’m thinking of them, but, then, maybe it also serves as a bitter reminder that I live in an environment where bombs don’t go off every day…
The BBC covers the news on SL so much better than the NYT, or the Wash Post.
