This morning continued a theme which has been running strong for 5-yo J for the past two days, but, I realize, thanks to this blog, that its been a theme for the whole month, starting with this post – death, and most particularly, what to make of the death of one’s parents.
But, I’m not going to be able to write about that now, because I’ve spent the last 4 hours baking in a mad frenzy to use up over-ripe bananas that had accumulated, and start on the consumption of chametz – flour and other ingredients that can be leavened – before Passover, which is only a few short weeks away (e gads!).
So, that’s two loaves of challah at the end, sprinkled with cinnamon, per S’s request last week. And 3 loaves of banana bread, and 2-dozen banana muffins. Flour’s nearly gone, and all the blackening bananas are in there!!
And, although I am exhausted, there is something very life-affirming about baking, especially baking yeasted bread like challah, that comes alive under one’s fingers as you knead it, which seems an appropriate counter-balance to the intensity of the morning discussion about “Why did my mommy and daddy have to die?” More on that subject in a day or two…
